"Some people experience rumination as completely uncontrollable, but individuals with depression can gain control over it."
The explanation is from one of the authors, Professor Roger Hagen.

But how so?
According to the scientist, the idea is to observe depressive thoughts with "detached attention".
This means seeing thoughts only as thoughts, not as a reflection of reality.
"You can't control what you think."
"But you can have control over how you respond to your thinking."
Metacognitive Therapy has emerged at the University of Manchester, England, and has been in use for the past 20 years.
Finally, Norwegian research was one of the first to use a control group in the method.
The study was published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Psychology.
