In it, scientists asked 6,500 adults, 52 and older, how old they felt.
They accompanied these volunteers for eight years.
After this long period, 86% of those who felt young were still alive.
Not so with 75% of those who felt older than their own age.
Most respondents, about 70%, felt younger at least three years.
"Although health (or lack thereof) was taken into account, after adjusting for all factors, we found that people who feel older have a 41% higher risk of mortality."
The statement is from one of the study's authors, Dr. Andrew Steptoe.
A separate analysis of the causes of death indicated a strong relationship between self-perceived age and death from cardiovascular problems.
