Amyloid plaques are protein deposits that block and reduce the efficiency of neurons.
This buildup can cause memory loss.
The research was done by scientists from Northwest A&F University (China).
The protective effect of chicory is due, you see, to chicoric acid.
The substance is also present in lettuce and dandelion.
To test the effects of chicory acid on memory, scientists experimented with guinea pigs.
Three groups of rodents were used.
The first group was fed with lipopolysaccharides.
The second received the same thing, and a chicory acid supplement.
The third received placebo, acting as a control.
After four hours, their learning and memory skills were evaluated.
As a result, the first group took longer to complete the tests.
Meanwhile, animals that received chicory acid supplementation were much faster.
The study was published in the scientific journal FASEB Journal.
