It is well known that there are many benefits to being fit.
Standing still, by contrast, brings none.
However, the damage to those who remain inactive is even worse.
In fact, not exercising can be worse than smoking.
Who claims is a study from the Cleveland Clinic (United States).
In it, 122,007 patients were analyzed between 1991 and 2014.
All of them performed treadmill tests and subsequently integrated mortality rate records.
As a result, a clear connection has been revealed between a longer and healthier life and higher levels of exercise.
"Cardiorespiratory fitness is inversely associated with long-term mortality," the study says.
"And it was associated with benefit in elderly patients with hypertension."
If a sedentary lifestyle amounts to having a serious illness, the simplest cure is exercise.
"Being sedentary has a worse prognosis than being hypertensive, diabetic or being an active smoker."
The comparison was made by study author Dr. Wael Jaber.
The study also looked at the risk of being overactive.
And he found that “ultra” exercises do not pose a higher risk of death.
Research has consistently found that the more one exercises, the lower the mortality rate.
The study was published in the journal JAMA Network Open.
