The revelation comes from research from the University of Western Australia.
In it, a test was done with 32 men and 35 women.
All were overweight or obese, and aged 55 to 80 years at baseline.
They underwent three different daily routines, in random order, with at least six days between each.
The first routine was to remain inactive for eight hours.
In the second, the volunteers took 30 minutes of moderate walking, followed by 6.5 hours of rest.
In the final routine, there were 30 minutes of walking, followed by 6.5 hours of inactivity, interrupted every 30 minutes with three minutes of light walking.
The study was conducted in a laboratory.
Men and women had the same meals the night before and during the test day.
Blood pressure and heart rate were measured.
Blood tests are done to assess adrenaline levels throughout each routine.
As a result, blood pressure, especially systolic blood pressure, was lower when the volunteers exercised.
This compared to the physiological data of when they remained inactive.
Systolic blood pressure, which indicates the strength of the flow in the arteries, is an indicator of heart problems.
Women in particular enjoyed extra benefits.
This may be due to a combination of factors.
These include varied adrenaline responses to exercise.
And the fact that all women in the study, by age, had higher cardiovascular risk.
The study was published in the journal Hypertension from the American Heart Association.
The discovery reinforces what we already recognize as a healthy lifestyle.
